Living Philanthropic has a project going on to support American Foundation for Suicide Prevention that DOUBLE matches your donations. Awesome.
Suicide was the tenth leading cause of death for Americans in 2007 and the third leading cause for 15 to 24 year olds. What’s sad—yet also hopeful—is that suicide is preventable. With the right intervention (therapy and/or medication), lives can be saved. Right now, however, only one in three depressed people seek help.
Suicide prevention is especially important during these trying times. Suicide rates rise as the economy goes down. Mental health experts and economists say the strongest correlation between suicide and economic downturn is found in Americans in their prime working years, ages 25 to 64.
I chose this foundation as a 5% for 5 charity because they tackle suicide through research, education and advocacy and provide survivors with a way to cope in solidarity through their Out of the Darkness Walks. They have also been recognized by the White House as a Champion of Change.
5% for 5 is my commitment to donate 5% of my salary to 5 different causes each month. This month’s theme is random causes.
